Northern Power Systems achieves UL 1741 SB certification for its NPS 100C Wind Turbine

We are proud to announce that, as of February 3rd, 2026, Northern Power Systems has obtained electrical certification (listing) to UL 1741 Supplement B (UL 1741 SB certification) for our NPS 100C wind turbine power converter!

Raising the Standard for Grid-Integrated Distributed Wind

UL 1741 SB, aligned with IEEE 1547-2018 and tested per IEEE 1547.1-2020, is now a mandatory requirement in most U.S. jurisdictions to ensure that distributed energy resources actively support grid stability, rather than simply disconnect during disturbances.

For distributed wind, achieving this standard is particularly complex. Unlike solar, wind systems must manage variable mechanical power input while delivering advanced grid-support functions such as:

  • Voltage and Frequency ride-through
  • Volt-VAR and Volt-Watt control
  • Frequency-Watt response
  • Standardized utility communication/control interface (SunSpec Modbus)

After more than 18 months of dedicated R&D and certification testing, NPS turbines are now:

  • Grid-code compliant in the most demanding U.S. markets
  • Utility-ready for fast interconnection approval
  • Finance- and insurance-friendly for project developers and asset owners

What This Means for Partners, Utilities and Developers

This certification positions Northern Power Systems among the very first distributed wind manufacturers with a UL 1741 SB–certified converter specifically engineered for wind.

For our partners, customers and utilities, this means fewer interconnection barriers, higher uptime and related return on investment, and long-term regulatory resilience.

This certification project was completed by Northern Power Systems’ U.S. subsidiary, with significant funding support from the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR; formerly NREL) through its Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) program; as well as technical and testing automation support from DER Security. Thank you to both NLR and DER Security!

If you are developing distributed wind projects in regulated or weak-grid environments, now is the time to talk.
