Our History: From Vermont to the World

A Proven Track Record in 100 kW Wind Turbines

For more than four decades, we’ve been turning energy challenges into opportunities.
Starting from our first wind installations in the 1980s, we have evolved into a global partner for renewable energy projects, delivering hundreds of systems across five continents. Today, we combine the power of wind and solar to help industries, farms, and communities generate clean energy and profit from it.

1974-1990s

Pioneering Direct Drive Wind Technology

Northern Power Systems was originally founded in 1974 as North Wind Power Company in Warren, Vermont, USA, marking the beginning of a journey dedicated to renewable energy innovation. In 1978, the company was awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop the HR2, a 2.2 kW direct-drive wind turbine, which became internationally recognized for its exceptional durability and performance in demanding environments.

Breakthrough Innovation: From Antarctica to Alaska

In 1993, NASA’s Ames Research Center awarded Northern Power Systems a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to construct a wind turbine at the South Pole that could function in the same extreme conditions as exist on Mars. In 1997, NPS installed a 3-kilowatt turbine at the South Pole, demonstrating the company’s capability to engineer solutions for the world’s harshest environments.

During the 1990s, Northern Power Systems developed its first 100 kW wind turbine, tested and proven in Alaska. This groundbreaking technology evolved into the NPS 100, featuring Permanent Magnet Direct Drive (PMDD) technology that eliminated gearboxes and minimized energy losses. The NPS 100 wind turbine technology won an R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine in 2000 and The American Wind Energy Association Technology Award in 2006.

2014

International Expansion

In 2014, the company established a European operational branch in Italy, which would become a critical component of NPS’s global strategy. This Italian branch successfully installed and managed over 450 plants in 4 years, demonstrating rapid growth and strong market acceptance in Europe.

New Era of Independence

In 2019, the European branch became an independent company through a management buyout, acquiring exclusive licenses on NPS technology and establishing its headquarters in Italy. Under new private ownership, NPS Srl has operated since October 2019 as a full-fledged engineering, manufacturing and sales organization, now headquartered in Casalecchio di Reno, near Bologna. This transformation marked the beginning of a new chapter, combining decades of American engineering excellence with European innovation and market presence.

Today

A Global Leader in Distributed Wind Energy

Today, Northern Power Systems stands as a global leader in distributed wind energy solutions. The NPS 100 turbine has logged over 79 million operating hours, with more than 900 units installed worldwide. The company has evolved beyond wind energy to offer comprehensive renewable energy solutions, including photovoltaic systems, energy storage, and advanced digital monitoring platforms, serving clients across multiple continents.
