The White Wind Monteleone installation is located in the hilltop town of Monteleone di Puglia, in the province of Foggia, at an altitude of 852 meters above sea level. With an average wind speed of approximately 6 m/s, the site provides favorable conditions for wind energy generation. The electricity produced by the turbine is 100% exported to the national grid.

The project demonstrates how small wind energy can contribute to decentralized renewable electricity generation while making productive use of suitable local wind resources.

The White Wind Small Wind Turbine Project

White Wind was founded in 2009 by Valentino Capparella. The initiative brought together a multidisciplinary team composed of an architect, two lawyers, and an engineer, with the goal of investing in renewable energy projects.

The team’s objective was to identify locations with strong wind potential and deploy reliable wind technologies suited to local conditions.

The White Wind team first encountered Northern Power Systems at a trade show in Rome. After evaluating the technology, the team selected NPS as the turbine supplier for the Monteleone project.

In March 2015, White Wind installed its first NPS wind turbine in Monteleone di Puglia. According to the original project case study, energy production exceeded expectations, reinforcing White Wind’s confidence in both the selected site and the NPS technology.

The installation also attracted interest locally, with landowners showing interest in the potential development of similar projects.

The Northern Power Systems Solution

For the Monteleone project, White Wind selected the NPS 60-24 wind turbine, installed on a 37-meter tower.

With an average wind speed of approximately 6 m/s at the site, the turbine generates approximately 204,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year.

The project shows how the performance of a small wind turbine in Italy depends not only on turbine technology but also on site-specific factors such as the local wind resource and installation characteristics. The NPS 60-24 features a low-maintenance gearless design developed to support reliable operation and reduce maintenance requirements. At the time of the original case study, Northern Power Systems reported fleet availability above 98%, together with 24/7 monitoring and local service support.

For White Wind, this combination of reliability, monitoring and reduced maintenance requirements allowed the operators to focus on the performance of the project rather than intensive turbine maintenance.

More Than 200,000 kWh of Renewable Energy per Year

Annual electricity generation is one of the most important indicators of the project’s performance.

At Monteleone, the turbine produces approximately 204,000 kWh per year, demonstrating the potential of small wind energy when suitable technology is deployed at a site with favorable wind conditions.

At the time of the project, the installation operated under a feed-in tariff of €0.268/kWh, with 100% of the electricity generated exported to the grid.

The electricity is delivered to the national grid, contributing renewable generation from a decentralized energy asset.
