Why Wind Turbines for Islands Require a Different Approach

For many islands around the world, securing a reliable electricity supply is one of the greatest operational challenges. Unlike mainland locations, most islands operate as off-grid microgrids, relying heavily on diesel generators to meet their energy demand. While effective, diesel generation comes with high fuel transportation costs, volatile operating expenses, intensive maintenance requirements, and significant carbon emissions.

The challenge becomes even greater in the Caribbean and other tropical regions, where hurricanes, saltwater corrosion, and extreme weather conditions place enormous stress on energy infrastructure. In these environments, resilience is just as important as energy production.

Although wind energy offers an attractive alternative to diesel generation, conventional wind turbines are often difficult to deploy on islands. Large concrete foundations, heavy lifting equipment, and complex logistics can make installation expensive or even impractical in remote locations.

For more than 40 years, Northern Power Systems has designed wind turbines for islands and other off-grid applications where accessibility, reliability, and resilience are essential. Instead of adapting conventional utility-scale technology, the company developed solutions specifically engineered for isolated environments.

Features such as ballasted concrete-free foundations, hydraulic tilt-up towers, direct-drive permanent magnet generators, and an integrated Hurricane Mode allow Northern Power Systems turbines to operate reliably while reducing installation costs, simplifying maintenance, and withstanding some of the world’s harshest weather conditions.

One of the best examples of this engineering philosophy is on the BVI region, where three Northern Power Systems wind turbines form part of a hybrid renewable energy system that has dramatically reduced diesel consumption while increasing energy resilience.

British Virgin Islands

One of the most impact NPS installation is in a Luxury Island Resort in British Virgin Islands. Completely isolated from the mainland electricity grid, the island must generate all of its electricity locally while ensuring uninterrupted power for guests and daily operations.

At the same time, its Caribbean location exposes the island to frequent tropical storms and Category 5 hurricanes, making resilience a critical design requirement for any energy infrastructure. Northern Power Systems delivered a wind energy solution specifically engineered for island environments where logistics, reliability, and extreme weather represent major engineering challenges.

The Challenge

Like many island communities, this one depended almost entirely on diesel generators for electricity production. Fuel had to be transported by sea, increasing operating costs while exposing the resort to fluctuations in diesel prices and supply logistics.

Installing conventional wind turbines presented additional difficulties. Heavy cranes, large concrete foundations, and extensive civil works were simply not practical on such a remote island.

Finally, any solution had to withstand one of the Caribbean’s greatest threats: Category 5 hurricanes capable of generating extreme wind loads that can severely damage traditional wind turbine installations.

The Northern Power Systems Solution

Northern Power Systems designed a solution tailored specifically for island applications by installing three NPS100C 100 kW wind turbines integrated with more than 1,230 solar PV panels and a battery energy storage system.

A key innovation is the AFS 2000 ballasted foundation, developed together with ARE Structures. Instead of relying on large concrete foundations, the system uses locally available soil and rock as ballast, eliminating the need to transport significant construction materials to the island and minimizing environmental impact.

Each turbine is installed on a 22-meter hydraulic tilt-up tower, allowing the turbines to be safely lowered before hurricanes and raised again once weather conditions improve. This unique feature significantly reduces storm-related risks while simplifying inspection and maintenance throughout the turbine’s lifetime.

Installation was also optimized for remote locations. Turbine components were shipped using standard containers and assembled on-site by a small installation crew without requiring large crawler cranes, reducing both costs and logistical complexity.

Results

Since entering operation, the project has demonstrated how wind turbines for islands can provide reliable, long-term renewable energy even under some of the world’s most demanding operating conditions.

Between 2020 and 2026, the three turbines generated more than 6.3 GWh of clean electricity, with an average annual energy production of approximately 301 MWh per turbine. During the same period, the system maintained an average availability of 98.6%, confirming the reliability of Northern Power Systems’ direct-drive technology.

Working together with the island’s solar PV installation and battery energy storage system, the turbines now provide a substantial share of the island’s electricity demand while significantly reducing diesel consumption. The project has displaced approximately 1.8 million litres of diesel fuel and prevented nearly 4,830 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, while achieving a targeted return on investment of approximately four years.
