A clear example of this trend is the White Wind Monteleone project, located in the southern region of Puglia. This area is widely known for its stunning landscapes, historic villages, olive groves, and vineyards. Beyond its natural and cultural heritage, Puglia is also characterized by strong and consistent wind resources, making it an ideal location for wind energy projects, particularly at a smaller scale.
The White Wind Monteleone installation is situated in the hilltop town of Monteleone di Puglia, in the province of Foggia. Thanks to favorable wind conditions, the turbine generates more than 200,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, which is fed directly into the national grid. This production demonstrates how Small Wind Energy can effectively contribute to decentralized energy systems while supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The company behind the project, White Wind, was founded in 2009 by Valentino Capparella. The initiative brought together a multidisciplinary team composed of an architect, two lawyers, and an engineer, all united by the goal of investing in renewable energy. Their vision was to identify high-potential locations and implement efficient, reliable wind technologies tailored to local conditions.
In March 2015, the team installed their first wind turbine in Monteleone di Puglia. The results quickly exceeded expectations, confirming both the quality of the site and the effectiveness of the technology used. Encouraged by this success, White Wind began planning additional installations, reinforcing its commitment to expanding Small Wind Energy projects across the region.
The growing interest in the project has also had a positive impact on the local community. Residents have been impressed by both the performance and the visual integration of the turbine, with several landowners expressing interest in hosting similar installations. This highlights an important aspect of Small Wind Energy: its ability to create local engagement and generate new economic opportunities.
The Northern Power Systems solution
According to the Italian Wind Energy Association (ANEV), Italy has significant untapped potential in Small Wind Energy, with the possibility of installing up to 16,200 MW of capacity capable of generating 27 TWh annually. Studies from the Politecnico di Milano highlight that a substantial portion of Italian territory benefits from favorable wind conditions, making small wind solutions highly viable.
The White Wind Monteleone team selected a turbine from Northern Power Systems, specifically the NPS 60-24 model mounted on a 37-meter tower. With an average wind speed of 6 m/s in the area, the site ensures strong and consistent performance. The system generates approximately 204,000 kWh per year, supported by a favorable feed-in tariff, making it a solid financial investment.
Beyond its economic benefits, the project highlights the environmental advantages of Small Wind Energy. The turbine’s reliable, low-maintenance, gearless design allows for efficient operation without the need for extensive technical management. With over 98% availability and continuous monitoring, the technology ensures long-term performance and stability.
