2.3 MW Permanent Magnet Direct Drive Wind Turbine
The Northern Power 2.3 wind turbine is based on a vastly simplified architecture that employs a unique combination of permanent magnet generators and advanced direct-drive design. The turbine blade rotor is connected directly to the slow-speed PM generator, with no separate gearbox, main shaft, bearing set, or couplings.
Our state-of-the-art control systems help minimize loads, increase energy capture, and maximize system availability. Some of the control features include:
- Individual blade pitch control
- Active tower dampening system
- Turbine subsystem distributed control using hardened fieldbus system
- Fleet level monitoring and control through integrated SmartView® management system

The Northern Power 2.3 has no gearbox, which eliminates the majority of the maintenance, replacement costs and downtime associated with today's typical wind turbine. The NPS 2.3 was designed for serviceability with features such as a service lift, onboard crane and hub accessibility from inside the nacelle.

Building on our 30-year heritage of wind turbine development, the NPS 2.3 wind turbine is an evolutionary design based on the Northern Power® 100 (NPS 100) and more than 50 years of cumulative field operating experience. Incorporating state-of-the-art permanent magnet generator and power electronics technology from our independently tested 1.5 MW drive train, the NPS 2.3 uses advanced technology to set a new standard for wind turbine performance. The Northern Power 2.3 delivers more power, more of the time, for a better bottom line.
Northern Power’s ground-breaking design and Permanent Magnet Direct Drive technology got its start over 10 years ago with research grants from the DOE, NREL, and the National Science Foundation. Its performance has been proven in recent years in the form of a commercialized 100kW turbine and now we bring exceptional value and performance to utility-scale wind farms worldwide.
