Wind energy has arrived in Dennis. Just after 7 a.m. Monday, trucks carrying the components of a Northern Power 100 kW wind turbine rolled into the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority parking lot on American Way in South Dennis. By noon, the first section of a three-part, 120-foot tower had been installed in a 16-foot-deep concrete foundation.
Paul Keith, CCRTA’s assistant general manager, began researching the pros and cons of a wind turbine on his own time after the 2007 opening of the transit authority facility.
“The town of Dennis was moving toward wind zoning, so things were clicking into place, but we had no funding yet,” Keith said.
Last year, the $700,000 project was fully funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
Northern Power Systems of Barre, Vt., designed the Northern Power 100 wind turbine in concert with NASA.
