Remote Alaskan villages fight rising diesel prices with community wind power

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) is a non-profit electric utility owned by the residents of 53 remote villages throughout the interior of western Alaska. To power these homes, AVEC used more than 150 diesel generators that cumulatively run more than 400,000 hours per year – at costs high enough to force some residents to choose between electricity and food. That’s why AVEC took the bold initiative to start introducing Northern Power 100 wind turbines into their diesel grid.
